Dieffenbachia propagates quickly with high success rates in either water or soil using basic stem cuttings.
Water Propagation (Stem or Tip Cuttings):
Cut a healthy 4–6 inch section of the stem (or top leaf tip) containing at least one node. Place the bare node end in a clear glass of water. Change the water weekly and root development will show within 3–4 weeks. Pot in soil once roots reach 2 inches long.
Soil Propagation (Cane Sections):
If the plant becomes tall or leggy, cut the thick main cane into 2–3 inch segments, each with at least one leaf node. Lay the segments horizontally (half buried) or stick them upright into moist potting mix. Keep the soil warm and damp until new shoots emerge.
Safety Precaution: Always wear gloves when propagating. The sap contains calcium oxalate crystals, which can cause skin irritation or temporary numbing if touched or ingested. Wash tools thoroughly after cutting.
